What Should You Look for When Choosing Sunscreen?

Choose the Right SPF Level

For daily use, choose at least SPF 30. For intense sun exposure, opt for SPF 50 or higher.

Make Sure It Provides Broad-Spectrum (UVA & UVB) Protection

Sun rays are divided into two types: UVA and UVB.

  • UVB rays cause sunburn and dark spots.
  • UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, leading to premature aging and wrinkles.

Sunscreens with broad-spectrum protection are effective against both types of rays. Always check the product label for the terms “Broad Spectrum” or “Geniş Spektrumlu Koruma”.

Choose a Formula Suitable for Your Skin Type

Oily & Acne-Prone Skin:

  • Opt for lightweight sunscreens labeled “Oil-Free”, “Non-Comedogenic” (won’t clog pores), and mattifying.
  • Gel or water-based products won’t feel heavy on the skin.

Dry Skin:

  • Choose moisturizing sunscreens enriched with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and vitamin E.
  • Cream-based formulas help keep the skin hydrated.

Sensitive Skin:

  • Sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are more suitable for sensitive skin.

Check for Water Resistance

When swimming, sweating, or spending time at the beach or pool, use water-resistant sunscreens to maintain protection.

Chemical or Mineral? Choose the Right Type

Sunscreens are divided into chemical and mineral (physical) filters:

Chemical Sunscreens:

  • Lightweight and easily absorbed.
  • Work by absorbing UV rays and neutralizing them.
  • Some chemical filters may irritate sensitive skin.

Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens:

  • Contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
  • Form a barrier on the skin’s surface to reflect UV rays.
  • Better suited for sensitive skin and children.

Proper Application Tips

  • Apply sunscreen 20–30 minutes before sun exposure.
  • Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.
  • Use enough product: about 1 teaspoon for the face and a shot glass amount for the body.

Choose Clean & Eco-Friendly Products

It’s also important to consider the environmental impact of your sunscreen. Protect nature by choosing reef-safe sunscreens that are free from octinoxate and oxybenzone.
